Why the stove or oven does not turn on: causes of breakdowns and solutions

When a stove or oven won’t turn on, the problem could be with the power supply and simple settings, or with the control, heating, or safety components. It’s important to proceed step by step, from the most obvious causes to more complex ones, to avoid further damage and waste time.
Below are common faults for electric, gas, and combination models, along with diagnostic and troubleshooting methods. If you smell gas, hear sparks, hear melting wires, or if the circuit breaker trips for no apparent reason, it’s safer to stop trying and seek professional help from emergency oven repair service.
What to check first
- Is there power in the outlet: check with another appliance or a test screwdriver (if you know how to use one).
- Has the circuit breaker/RCD tripped? Check the panel and try turning the circuit breaker back on. If the power trips repeatedly, do not turn it on repeatedly.
- The integrity of the plug and cable: signs of overheating, cracks, or a burning smell are reasons to stop.
- Modes and timer: Some ovens do not start heating until the clock is set or the timer/lock is activated.
- Is the oven door securely closed: Some models have a limit switch/lock that prevents the oven from starting.
If the stove is electric: common causes
- Blown power fuse or terminal block: possible open contact, darkened terminals, or a smell. The solution is to replace the damaged components and restore reliable contact.
- Faulty burner/mode switch: the burner or oven does not respond, only works in one position, or the heat disappears. The switch needs to be diagnosed and replaced.
- The heating element is faulty: the oven turns on but doesn’t heat, or the circuit breaker trips when starting. The solution is to check the resistance and replace the heating element.
- Thermostat/temperature sensor problem: heating doesn’t start or stops too early. The circuits need to be checked and the sensor/thermostat replaced.
- Control board malfunction: no response to buttons, blinking indicators, errors on the display. Options include repairing/re-soldering components, replacing the board, or restoring the wiring.
If the stove is gas or a combination stove
- No gas supply: valve closed, empty cylinder, problems with the supplier. Open the valve, check the cylinder/pressure reducer, and check the supply.
- The gas control is triggered: the flame goes out immediately after releasing the handle. Causes include a dirty thermocouple, weak flame, or burner misalignment. Solution: cleaning, correct diffuser installation, and checking the thermocouple.
- The electric igniter is not working: no spark, or there is a clicking sound but no ignition. Check the power supply (if using mains ignition), clean the electrode and burner of moisture/grease, and inspect the condition of the wire and igniter unit.
- The oven does not ignite: clogged nozzle, weak draft, incorrectly positioned knob. Cleaning and adjustment are required, and sometimes the nozzle needs to be replaced.
Checking the power supply: circuit breaker in the panel, outlet, plug, and terminal block
If the stove or oven won’t turn on, you should start troubleshooting with the power supply: often, the problem isn’t with the appliance itself, but with a tripped circuit breaker, poor contact in the outlet/plug, or loose terminals at the connection point.
Perform all checks only in accordance with safety precautions: turn off the power at the panel before disassembling outlets, plugs, and terminal connections; do not work with live wires. If in doubt, it’s best to call an electrician.
Bottom line: if there is no power on the line or it is lost due to a poor contact in the circuit breaker, outlet, plug, or terminal block, the stove/oven will not turn on even if the electronics are working properly. If the power is stable and the device still won’t start, the cause is most often internal to the device (button/switch, thermal protection, control board, heaters) and further diagnostics are required.
